This is the health and safety field programs level leader for the generation field support for the applicable region. The Director Health and Safety Field Support plans, directs and manages implementation of health and safety programs for the assets in Fossil Hydro Operations, Transmission, and Distribution under senior management direction. This position provides leadership to the Health and Safety Specialists embedded in the generation facilities, transmission, and distribution and requires strong knowledge of utility industry operations and maintenance, organizations and workforce, project management and health and safety risks and challenges. This position is responsible for collaborating with operating organizations to develop strategies for improving health and safety performance, managing health and safety risks, preventing health and safety incidents, and developing and implementing action plans to effectively direct the response to significant incidents. This position oversees multiple levels of professional staff who provide compliance support, programs, activities and tools. Establishes collaborative and effective working relationships with Senior Management in supported business units to develop and implement solutions that drive continuous safety improvement and compliance excellence across all operational areas. This position collaborates with impacted business units and ultimately directs the development and execution of strategies and/or action plans to effectively mitigate safety risks and manage issues. This position directs negotiations with regulatory agencies regarding new requirements, enforcement, etc. Position must demonstrate a high level of critical/strategic thinking to resolve high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Lead and manage the work activities and performance of Field Health and Safety Managers and Specialists providing health and safety support services for Power Generation Operations and Transmission and Distribution. These services include program implementation for a wide range of health and safety issues including, but not limited to, electrical safety, confined space, HAZCOM, chemical management and safety, industrial hygiene, safety engineering, fire protection, contractor safety, etc. Provide leadership to subordinates and effectively manage employee performance through clear communication of expectations, goals, status; recognition of accomplishments; timely, specific feedback on performance issues; active involvement in and support of employee work efforts. Develop bench strength by effectively mentoring unit employees. Effectively manage relationships with key internal customers (including budget and resource allocation), other company support functions, and external contacts to meet business needs. Develop and support mechanisms to ensure that subordinates maintain up-to-date knowledge of health and safety requirements and effectively communicate with affected businesses and management. Lead and manage business functions for the Health and Safety Field Support Org., including work plans, performance reviews, staff development, KPI monitoring and reporting, budgeting and self-assessment.
For internal customers and as appropriate for this position, provide staff/leadership support to Power Generation Operations and Commercial Business facility executive management via appropriate Health and Safety Performance Councils/Peer Team to drive safety performance, continuous improvement, and effective implementation of plans and strategies. Build effective trust and relationships with internal customers to further drive alignment and performance across supported business units. Position is expected to serve as an effective, embedded member of Senior Management teams for supported businesses.
Collaborate with Health and Safety leadership and subject matter experts (SME) to ensure seamless and consistent delivery of health and safety support to internal customers. Effectively manage and implement changes in processes and roles and responsibilities as part of post-merger integration efforts. Collaboration with SME groups and leadership across all health and safety disciplines is essential for the success of this organization. Includes 1) review of, and influencing new and changing programs driven by regulatory and company requirements; 2) working with SME management and professionals to resolve compliance challenges, and implement solutions and corrective actions as a result of health and safety incidents, near misses, etc.
Support Senior Management in business planning, decision-making, and communication regarding health and safety issues impacting current and future operations, requirements and expenditures.
Qualifications:
Basic/Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental, Physical Sciences, Medical Sciences or similar field with a minimum of 7 years of experience OR 10 years of experience performing health and safety work and/or day-to-day responsibility for the health and safety of engineering, technical, construction and operations personnel in lieu of a degree
Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a team of direct reports

Advanced degree in engineering, science or other related field of study or business
10 years of experience in power generation or transmission/distribution operations
Professional certification(s), such as Certified Safety Professional, Registered Professional Engineer, Certified Industrial Hygienist, etc.
Experience in interfacing with and influencing regulatory agencies at the local, state and federal level
Understanding of inter-departmental relationships and processes
Demonstrated personal accountability for own actions while modeling company values
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others from diverse backgrounds to achieve common goals
